Class Project at FIT

WHEN: Saturday, August 2nd

WHERE: FIT Property (parking lot at corner of Jackson and Springdale)

WHAT TIME: Yard work/Children’s Bible activity 4:30-6:30
Picnic style dinner 6:30-7:30

WHAT TO DO: We will be cleaning out flower beds and planting perennials at 14 FIT units. There will be children’s activities that will be going on during this time. We will then all get back together to eat around 6:30 and pack up by 7:30.

WHAT TO BRING: For those doing yard work (versus helping out with the kids), bring work gloves and a yard tool of your choice for clearing out the beds and planting new flowers.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: I need for a couple people to organize a few children’s games/Bible activities for Cornerstone and FIT children. This doesn’t have to be anything elaborate but just something to keep them occupied for a little while. There is a play area at the FIT property so balls or outdoor games are definitely appropriate. We will be outside the entire time.

COST: For $25 per family, you can have a fun filled evening with family and friends while getting to meet some very special families at FIT. The $25 will cover all the food your family can eat, as well as for the 10 FIT families, and the plants that we will be planting.

RSVP: Let me know how many will be attending from your family by Sunday, July 27th. Also, please let me know if you can coordinate activities for the kids.

QUESTIONS: Feel free to e-mail or call Kelly Cates on her cell at 229.4837

Dudes Night Out

Dudes Night Out is going to be this upcoming Thursday Night, June 12th beginning at 5:00. We will meet at Buffalo Wild Wings on Poplar and eat BONELESS wings for 50 cents. That way we don't have to eat around the bone and feel the burn! After dinner we will adjourn to the Paradiso for the 6:45 showing of "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull".

Let me add this:
Folks, if you only want to come to dinner, that's fine. If you just want to come to the movie, that's fine. If you want to do both, that's fine. In other words, if you can't make it for all of it, we would just love to see you for a little bit.

Down to Two...Literally

The much anticipated match-ups between four #1 teams wasn't all it was hyped up to be. Memphis and Kansas rolled in their games tonight making for an intriguing match-up in the Finals on Monday night. The game on Monday will determine our Bracket Challenge Champion as well. Melissa has Kansas winning it all and Brandon stayed true to the hometown team picking Memphis to win its first ever championship. I could go through the rest of the standings, but it really doesn't matter. This is a two team, two person match-up with the winner taking home the first ever Cornerstone Class Golden Ball Trophy (pictured). Bragging rights and a great fireplace mantle piece are on the line. I want to thank all the others for playing. The trophy will formally be presented to the winner next Sunday in class.

And then there were Four...

For the first time in tournament history all four #1 seeds have made it to the Final Four. For the first time in our bracket challenge history never has the intensity been more intense than it is now. Bart is barely hanging on to the lead withstanding a significant charge from Melissa and Mitzi (Congrats to both for getting all final four teams right). Eddy has fallen back to fourth and in an unbelievable test of stamina Andy has come from the bottom of the pack and grabbed a place in fifth. The competition will definitely get heated this weekend with 5 of the 6 brackets having UCLA winning the championship. Duncan and Brandon are sitting in the wings hoping that UCLA falls. If the Tigers do take care of business, this challenge leaderboard will totally be turned upside-down. This truly may be the year we 'Remember the Alamo' again.

How Sweet is Your 16?

All I can say about the last two days in UNBELIEVABLE! Who would have ever thought that David(son) would slay the giant in Georgetown (a team many thought would go to the Final Four and maybe even win it all), that Stanford would win after their coach is ejected in the first half and that Tennessee would need some extra time to take care of Butler. All #1 seeds are still in, but just barely for two of them (Memphis & UCLA both had close calls). Our leaderboard has seen a huge shift. Eddy riding his Mountaineers huge victory over Duke has vaulted himself into second place. For now, Bart is the leader but I was truly on the edge of my seat last night hoping my bracket was not about to blow-up with UCLA (my pick for the champion). David has jumped in the mix and is in a tie for third with Melissa, Mitzi (I'm so proud) and Colby. So let's take a few days off, let the teams travel and we'll pick this up gain later this week. Remember, because of the point system, this is still anyone's game, or I guess bracket.

Round 1 in the Books...

It's Awesome Baby! What a great Round 1 of March Madness with tons of upsets. Two #12 seeds and two #13 seeds advanced to the second round. Also, pretty good round for local teams as MSU, UT, Arkansas and Memphis all won their games. Round 1 was also clearly dominated by the women of the class. Congrats to Melissa, Shana and Theresa who are all tied for first place and picked 26 games correctly out of 32. The guys jump in the mix with Colby and Bart getting 24 right along with Kelly and Mitzi. However, no one is out of it as only 5 point seperates first to last and the points for a correct pick begin increasing. Ashley, I'm not sure what happened to your picks. I can't wait for round two. Good luck to everyone!

The road to the Final Four will lead us directly to the Cooper's home court. Tip-off is set for 4:00 and will last till the final horn; so leave the kids at home. The Coopers will plan on having the steaks, salad, potatoes, etc and will prepare dessert. They are asking that each person bring $5 to defray the cost of the meat as well as your favorite appetizer. If you are not one that enjoys a bacon wrapped filet mignon, grilled to perfection, they will also have some chicken available. An accurate count is needed so reserve your tickets now. Please RSVP by Wednesday April 2nd. There will be sign-up sheets in class the next two weeks or simply reply to this post. This truly will be one shining moment!

Let the Madness Begin

March Madness is upon us, and that means that it is time to introduce the Inaugural Cornerstone Class March Madness Invitational Bracket Challenge! I hope everyone will enter the bracket challenge. As I have seen in the past, it takes ABSOLUTELY NO KNOWLEDGE of basketball to play, or even to win. So you think you know who's going to win? Maybe you think it is going to be Memphis or maybe Tennessee. No one will believe you picked the winner unless you put it in writing. The winner of the challenge will not only have bragging rights for the next year, there may even be a trophy awarded. To join the challenge, click the link below. You'll be asked to enter the group's password before you can join. The group password is included below.

Become A Mentor

“To give you HOPE for the Future”
2 Timothy 4:17-18

Become a Mentor!

A Mentor is someone who provides another with support, counsel, friendship, reinforcement and serves as a Christian example. Last month was National Mentoring Month. This observance focuses our attention on the need for individuals, businesses, government agencies, schools, faith-based organizations and more to mentor and help people build positive futures for themselves. At AGAPE Child & Family Services, we have taken that one step further by launching an initiative to focus on the need for mentors all year round. Be a part of the effort to engage and empower children and families as they work towards their future. The four programs where the AGAPE/Grizzlies Mentoring Initiative will be focused and utilized to help youth and families in Shelby County are as follows: 1) Families in Touch (FIT); 2) Foster Care (Family Permanency Initiative); 3) Family Preservation; and 4) Adoption Center of the MidSouth.

We're Having a Party this Friday

Alright . . . if you happened to miss class this Sunday morning, you'll have to save this date FAST! This Friday (yep, that's quick but we promise we'll have another one in the near future) we've been invited to the Hambrick's house to celebrate the coming together of the Cornerstone and Young Couples Classes and the numbers of new people that God has brought our way over the last few months! If you have kids and are able to get a sitter, that would be great. This will give us a better opportunity to spend time talking with each other and allowing our relationship to continue to solidify and become deeper as well. If you have kids and can't get a sitter . . . come anyway! Mr. Jim will be grilling his famous (at least according to Amber Morgan that is : )chicken for everyone so if you guys could bring; appetizers, side items for the chicken, and desserts. Just send an email with what you can bring and Terri will fill in where needed. We look forward to seeing you there!

GNO - Guys Night Out

Fellas!!

Just a reminder-

Guys Night Out at Buffalo Wild Wings on Polar next to Old Navy on Tuesday, February 12th at 6:00 PM. Leave the wife and kiddies at home and come join us for some wings (it's 40 cent wing night so we can save money too) and great Man conversation. We'll probably discuss lots of stuff like home repair, sports, and the occasional how many Asian Zing wings can Duncan eat.

Here is who I have so far:
Eddy "Give me wings or give me death" Efaw
Brandon "I like to eat, eat, eat caribbean jerk wings" Cooper
Justin "The Gut" Banker
David "Looks like an Elder, eats like... well, an elder. ALOT!!" Jordan
Bart "What's happenin', hot wings? (quote from Long Duck Dong in "Sixteen Candles")" May
Colby "Just Wingin' it" Canterbury
Hope we can add some more on Sunday!

"I'll say it before and I'll say it again. Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it" -Ferris Bueller

Because of Him,
Colby
